关于皮亚诺公理(Peano axioms)定义自然数

  •
  •   YuxiangLuo · 2019-08-22 11:31:42 +08:00 · 20817 次点击
    这是一个创建于 1680 天前的主题,其中的信息可能已经有所发展或是发生改变。

    因为想从头学习数学,最近在看陶哲轩的实分析,首先就是定义自然数:

    Axiom 2.1. 0 is a natural number.

    Axiom 2.2. If n is a natural number, then n++ is also a natural number.

    Axiom 2.3. Axiom 2.3. 0 is not the successor of any natural number; i.e., we have n++ = 0 for every natural number n.

    Axiom 2.4. Different natural numbers must have different successors; i.e., if n, m are natural numbers and n = m, then n++ = m++. Equivalently2, if n++ = m++, then we must have n = m.

    前四条看下来,有两个疑问:

    • "0"这个符号是自然数,但它是如何对应到我们所认知的 0 这个数量的
    • "++"这个动作为什么是+1,而不是+0.1,+0.77

    作者显然知道我们会有这些疑惑,紧接着给出一个例子:

    N := {0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5,...}.

    并且勾勒出目前只缺少一个公理

    What we want is some axiom which says that the only numbers in N are those which can be obtained from 0 and the increment operation - in order to exclude elements such as 0.5.

    可是最后一个公理是数学归纳法原理:

    Axiom 2.5 (Principle of mathematical induction). Let P(n) be any property pertaining to a natural number n. Suppose that P(0) is true, and suppose that whenever P(n) is true, P(n++) is also true. Then P(n) is true for every natural number n.

    对 axiom 2.5 的补充说明是这样:

    The informal intuition behind this axiom is the following. Suppose P(n) is such that P(0) is true, and such that whenever P(n) is true, then P(n++) is true. Then since P(0) is true, P(0++) = P(1) is true. Since P(1) is true, P(1++) = P(2) is true. Repeating this indefinitely, we see that P(0), P(1), P(2), P(3), etc. are all true - however this line of reasoning will never let us conclude that P(0.5), for instance, is true. Thus Axiom 2.5 should not hold for number systems which contain “ unnecessary ” elements such as 0.5. ——这里直将 0++ 赋值给变量“ 1 ”,1++赋值给变量“ 2 ”,并且直接认为变量"1"的值就是我们熟悉的数量 1,变量“ 2 ”的值就是我们熟悉的数量 2,由此证明自然数集合中不存在 0.5 这样的数。这样的推理科学吗?还有我上述的第一个疑问("0"这个符号是自然数,但它是如何对应到我们所认知的 0 这个数量的)貌似也没有解决。

    数学与现实其实是解耦的。数学世界可以完全脱离现实世界,在虚构的世界里自己定义一些数和基本规则,然后基于基本规则演化着玩。

    但是一般来说,这些数和规则要尽量设计成有利于描述现实世界的样子,这样才好玩和有用。

    因此,数学是一种理论工具,当你使用它来描述现实世界时,是在使用工具。

    比如指南针,它指着的方向为什么就是现实中的南边?其实这是人为规定的,为了更方便的使用工具,要做一些基本规定。

    人们人为地、故意地、通过正式协商、公布或通过教育、口口相传等方式把“ 0 ”这个符号指定为现实中的 0 这个概念。

    没有书,我觉得除了你搬过来的这些,应该还有一些说明,你没注意到,比如++符号的定义

    因为这里面只要定义 0,和++操作,不需定义 1,只不过因为习惯把 0 的后继数称为 1 了而已。你也可以叫他任何名称,比如 0.1,这仅仅只是一个代号

    皮亚诺第一条、第五条,这 2 个规定是导致不完备的起因。除了这样定义也没有其他更好的方式,也就是当前极小和极大维度,数学基本还是失灵的。

    自然数定义:
    自然数有一个源头,随便拿啥符号写,它是源头;
    自然数存在一个后继操作,每个自然数都有后继,不同自然数有不同后继,源头不是任何其他自然数的后继,对每个自然数,后继操作必须是一样的(你可以每次加 0.77 ,但必须每次都加 0.77 ,所以 {0, 0.77, 1.54,...} 你可以说是自然数;
    归纳公理:首先某命题对源头成立,且某命题对自然数 n 成立意味着意味着意味着(重要事说三遍)该命题对 n 的后继成立,则该命题对所有自然数成立。
    比如,1=一,2=二,3=三,但并不意味着 4 是 4 条横杠。同样,创造 2=二也不意味着 3 一定就是三,这个错误被称为不完全归纳。

    ++对应的应该是定义域内的最小间隔单位吧,因为 n 是自然数了,所以++ = +1

    前四条公里无法排除这样的“自然数集”:

    0, 0#, 1, 1#, 2, 2#, 3, 3#, ...
    其中 0, 1, 2, 3...是一溜; 0#, 1#, 2#, 3#...是独立的另一遛。

    在书中的那个例子中,0.5 就是 0#,1.5 就是 1#,以此类推;
    可以看出,你对这个例子是存在误解的:
    它并不是说构造从+1 变成了+0.5,0 的后续仍然是 1 而不是 0.5,0.5 的后续是 1.5 而不是 1
    这个例子想表达这样的“自然数集”中会同时包含“ Integers ”和“ Half-Integers ”两溜数。

    所以后面通过引入公理 5 来确立:只有从 0 开始的那一溜是“特殊的”,只有那一溜可以 apply 数学归纳法。

    是酱紫的。

    @wutiantong 我想更正一下这句话:所以后面通过引入公理 5 来确立:只有从 0 开始的那一溜是“特殊的”,只有那一溜可以 apply 数学归纳法。

    更准确来说,其实是,利用公理 5 中的 property 可以证出 “自然数集”中只包含从 0 开始的那一溜。

    感谢楼主, 这本陶哲轩的书不错, 非常清晰! 想从头学习数学的话, 还有什么其他的书推荐吗? 我之前下了一堆书, 但是感觉摸不到头绪. 有空交流 2422609586

    另外关于为什么直接用实际的数, 其实他有给出解释:
    Example 2.1.9. (Informal) Suppose that our number system N consisted of the following collection of integers and half-integers: N := {0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, . . .}.
    (This example is marked “ informal ” since we are using real numbers, which we ’ re not supposed to use yet.)

    所以这里只是为了看起来方便. 下一段还有对此的说明:
    But it is difficult to quantify what we mean by “ can be obtained from ” without already using the natural numbers, which we are trying to define. 因为无法定义这个++是多少, 所以很难把非"++"系列的这溜数(感谢 @wutiantong )干掉. 也就是说不能直接定义小数不是自然数, 因为自然数是什么本身就不知道是什么, 万一真的是小数呢? 举个栗子: 如果定义 n++=n+0.5, 那么这个自然数列就是{0,0.5,1,1.5,2,...} ; 当 n++=n+0.77 的时候, {0,0.77,1.54,...}, 以此类推.

    归纳法这里, 我的理解是实际上有 3 个重点: 定义初值, 定义规则, 定义初值和规则的联系.

    但就这个第五公理的归纳法来说, 其实重点就一个, 继承数 n++必须和原数 n 有相同的性质. 比如自然数 n^2 大于等于 n, 但是 0.5^2=0.25<0.5, 不符合这个定义, 所以排除了(0,1)的小数开始的所有溜的数. 但如果是 {0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, . . .}. 这个数列用平方比大小就排除不了, 需要其他的排除法了.

    对此陶也很好的解释了:
    Remark 2.1.10.
    ...
    Of course we haven ’ t defined many of these concepts yet, but when we do, Axiom 2.5 will apply to these properties. (A logical remark: Because this axiom refers not just to variables, but also properties, it is of a different nature than
    the other four axioms; indeed, Axiom 2.5 should technically be called an axiom schema rather than an axiom - it is a template for producing an (infinite) number of axioms, rather than being a single axiom in its own right. To discuss this distinction further is far beyond the scope of this text, though, and falls in the realm of logic.)

    其实是一个用未来来定义现在的一个方法. 即自然数列有几溜数, 不光是由这 5 条公理决定, 还要由以后新定义的特性来返回重新定义自然数. 所以 tao 觉得这条公理应该叫公理纲要. 这样的定义虽然如 @rogwan 说的完备性的有问题, 比如以后会不会又发现什么奇怪的哪溜数混入进来, 不过总算是排除了目前已知的绝大多数数字.

    @QingchuanZhang 对啊,事实上在没有“数学归纳法”帮助的情况下你也不好去说哪些不是自然数,不信你可以试试看能不能表达出一个公理把自然数集限制在只包含 0 和 0 的后继者。

    @QingchuanZhang 对啊,但“自然数必须是 0 的有限次后继”这种表达很不严谨:

    首先“有限”这个地方是口语的,模糊的,缺乏定义的

    其次“必须是”这个地方它不符合构造主义的哲学,也不能算是公理化的用词。

    相比之下原文中对数据归纳法的表达可以更好的称为第五条公理。
